Vija Celmins’ 2019 exhibit at The Met Breuer was described by the New York Times as “a ravishing retrospective of art, both intimate and cosmic.” She has had more than 40 solo exhibitions at major museums, including Tate Britain, Centre Pompidou, and the Whitney and in 1997 she received a MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant”. For more than five decades Celmins has been creating exquisitely detailed paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints depicting natural imagery, including ocean waves, desert floors, and night skies.
Checkerboard’s film on this celebrated artist will be released later this year.
